In the book true notebooks their are a couple instances where the charicters have to deal with culture changes, like the main charicter for one he has to come into this new atmosphere that he has never expierienced. This was the first time he had ever been to a prison in his life and i judging by his lack of inspiration for the criminal in his book he obviously hasnt spent much time with any rough charicters.
The main charicter is not the only person who has to deal with a culture change infact he deals with it less than the inmates at the prison because he only has to deal with this different culture for two days out of the week while the inmates have to deal with people from different towns countries and races everyday of their life while they are locked up.
Being born in australia i have had tto deal with a huge culture shock when i moved to america. at my younge age i had never realy learnt anything about america the only real connection we had to this country was television shows like the simpsons. When i arrived i was very out of place i didnt listen to any of the same music which was mostly hip hop at my school i was more into hippie jam bands, rock, and ska which hasnt changed for me but when i moved here everyone listened to rap and i just didnt understand it but i befreinded a kid named keelan (Keelo) who rapped and was really into underground hip hop after hanging out with him for a couple years i have come to like rap although not lil wayne or drake ect, but their are alot of underground rappers that ive come to like that i would have never listened to if i hadnt been introduced to this culture such as Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, MF Doom, Cage and many more.
I think alot of people in the book doubt mark just because he is a new comer and doesnt seem like the type of guy that would get along with criminals. one of the inmates i think doubts him alot would be kevin judging on his i dont wanna read in class attitude he seems like he only did this class so that he could get out of his cell although the paper he wrote proves that he has potential and i know that mark sees that in him. Also i think that many of the staff do not believe in him because everytime he mentions his students they laugh of chuckle as if to say "are u serious you think you can teach those kids"
I have had to deal with alot of doubts in my life from freinds and family but the biggest doubt i had to deal with was from my high school counseler. Well lets just say she was kind of a B#*ch.. she told me everytime i visited her that no college would ever accept me and it lowered my self esteem alot although madde me want to try even harder than before and i am still trying to proove her wrong but if i do make it into columbia ill feel alot better because then ill know that everything she ever told was a lie.,
