Heart Beat

Heart Beat

by C.J.

Thump-thump

Heart beats as loud as a drum but is still unheard

Thump-thump

Holding your breath and praying to God that these messengers of death don’t find you.

Thump-thump

Closing your eyes and wishing you were any other place but the place you are now

Thump-thump

Crouching in a ball, hoping that today isn’t the day the good Lord calls you home

Thump-thump

Huddled in masses, covering your mouth as a soldier passes

Thump-thump

Hoping to God that the person who’s hiding you wasn’t lyin’ to you when they said they’d keep you safe

Thump-thump

Praying and pleading as you hear the floorboards squeakin’ above your head

Thump-thump

Letting out a small gasp of air and shedding a single tear as you realize the soldiers have stopped moving

Click-click

Screaming and crying is all that you hear as everyone is dying around you.

Thump-th-BANG!

Your heart stops

You feel cold

The last images you see are the ones of your family and friends, dead because you and them were different.

Never again.
