Impressions of a foreign country.

At first glance this book ( The complete Persepolis) may seem as though it has no drama or suspense due to the fact its all drawings and word bubbles. The scene in this book that caught me the most was when the family maid Mehri found interests in Marji's uncles son. It was not explained before hand that one could not date or marry outside of there respective class. So as the news spreads it gets back to Marjis father who then goes to see the young man. With the simple words "Mehri is not my daughter but my maid." the young man seemed as if he did not care or even love her anymore. This particular moment made me feel as tough Merji's father was too uptight with the traditional ways in which he was brought up. At the same he rebels against the very rule of the country in which he resides. His act of going ahead and ending there relationship shows he is old fashion yet he wants change at the same time. He oppesses the wearing of veils just as his wife because of the new rule that states "Womens hair excites men" thus they need to cover up, yet at the same time he is for the seperation of classes due to his environment.
I chose this book due to my major which will be illistration. The fact that it was illistrated is what caught my eye nothing more really. It seemed like any other book. Though I did see complexity in it, no one would illistrate a book without adding some hidden messages or themes or having a deeper meaning.
The connection that the pictures int he book do indeed make for a deeper meaning. One being the scenes where Marji says she wants to be a prophet and she talks to god. The fact that god is illistarted gives these scenes deeper making. Another scene is when the cinema is burned and the picture depicts the people burning and screaming as they burn. This conveys the feeling of sorrow and pain. I want to learn to do that through my major, well not those specific emotions. The expressions also help with the reading it helps you get a sense of how people really feel and react to things.
